What is this site about?
It’s simple. Tourism standards improve the quality of visitor experiences and the performance of your business, while protecting the environment. The ASEAN Tourism Standards on this website are the official tourism industry standards for Laos. These have been adapted especially for use in Laos. When you meet all the requirements, you will be certified with an ASEAN Tourism Standard that has been validated for Laos. The best examples will be nominated for recognition at the annual ASEAN Tourism Forum.
Being certified with an ASEAN Tourism Standard enables you to receive priority listing on official tourism websites and social media platforms for Laos. You will be listed on the ASEAN Secretariat official website (www.asean.org) and promoted at the Annual ASEAN Tourism Forum, festivals and associated events. It also puts you ahead of non-certified businesses when it comes to training, sharing information and industry events. Businesses that are certified generally have better overall performance in terms of profitability, employee welfare and social and environmental indicators than non-certified businesses.
The ASEAN – compliant Standards available for certification in Laos include:
- Clean Tourist City
- Community Based Tourism
- Green Hotel
- MICE – Venue (Meeting Room)
- MICE – Exhibition
- MICE – Events
- Public Toilet
- Spa Services

You will find Application Forms, Self-Assessment Forms and the ASEAN Standard Specification Documents adapted for use in Laos for download on this website. Just go to the tab that you are interested in and download the details from there.
The whole idea of tourism standards – anywhere in the world – is that they are kept up to date. This means you need to reapply every 2 or 3 years to maintain your certification. Reapplying is easy. If you maintain and improve your services, then you will find the process will provide you with a good ‘health check’ on your business. Increasingly, online and other mainstream travel agents, as well as traveler review platforms like TripAdvisor, are looking for tourism businesses that are certified.
Certified businesses will receive an official plaque and logo that can be used for marketing and promotion online and also with tourist signs and labelling at your property, village or enterprise.
