ASEAN Spa Service Standard in Lao PDR

The spa industry has enjoyed rapid growth and development over the past 20 years, often growing as much as 20% annually in some countries. It is estimated that there is some 25,000 or 1/3rd of the world’s spas, health or traditional and massage centres in the Asia- Pacific region, of which there is almost 2,000 professional spa businesses in the ASEAN member states. Therefore, there is a need to create a standard to establish a unified spa standard across         ASEAN members states. Most of the spa service techniques are using traditional treatment that have been passed down from one generation to another while being respectful of cultural diversity and traditional heritage of ASEAN member countries.

The ASEAN Spa Service Standard

is to develop and implement the spa service standard effectively, in line with the growth of the spa service that is happening all over the world, especially in the ASEAN member countries. This spa service business has brought traditional health care treatment methods to benefit the people of ASEAN. The important thing is that the ASEAN spa service standards will help to improve the quality of human resources in the spa service sector and the facilities of spa services in ASEAN. This standard will determine the professional standards of the spa business that will help entrepreneurs to benefit from doing business in the spa profession in the same way. At the same time, it is also beneficial to take care of the well-being of service users.

Major Criteria of ASEAN spa service standard

Major Criteria No.1: Location

The spa shall be located in a place that is convenient and safe. There are appropriate service areas where solid waste and wastewater can be managed in a responsible and sanitary manner.

Option 1: On-line Application forms and submit documents via website

  • Step 1: The business owner downloads the self-assessment form
  • Step 2: The business owner undertakes a self-assessment by using the downloaded self-assessment form (Please consult with the relevant department of Provincial DICT or MICT for more advice)
  • Step 3: The business owner submits the application from and the self-assessment form and attachments on line via website
  • Step 4: Responsible organization waits for a response from Provincial DICT or MICT (within 1-3 weeks) by phone and email and online
  • Step 5: ASEAN Tourism standards certification boards and assessors visit the place and undertake assessment/audit at the appointed time
  • Step 6: Notify the assessment/audit results to the business owner (within 1-3 weeks) by phone and email and online
  • Step 7: Give the award and the ASEAN tourism standard certificate

  • Step 5: ASEAN Tourism standards certification boards and assessors visit the place and undertake assessment/audit at the appointed time
  • Step 6: Notify the assessment/audit results to The business owner (within 1-3 weeks)
  • Step 7: Give the award and the ASEAN tourism standard certificate
