ASEAN Homestay Standard in Lao PDR
All over the ASEAN region, the homestay programme is a form of alternative tourism in which tourists are given the opportunity to experience the way of life in a typical village with local community, nature-based and cultural tourism attractions in the surrounding areas.
The standard focuses on the homestay
where guests will stay with the host’s family and experience the everyday way of life of the family and community in both a direct and indirect manner.
Major Criteria of ASEAN Homestay Standard
Major Criteria No.1: Host
The homestay shall be located close to nature-based and cultural tourism attractions and Homestay providers have completed tourism service or homestay course.
Major Criteria No.2: Accommodation
Structure of house is in good condition and design and building materials reflect local architecture and identity with bathroom/toilet for the guest, electricity supply, adequate clean water supply inside the house. Major Criteria No.3: Activities
The village and community-based activities shall retain its identity, values, and culture, in which tourists are given the opportunity to learn and experience a distinct and authentic experience. Major Criteria No.4: Management
The Homestay organisation shall have a systematic structure with clear roles, responsibilities and lines of communication that is operated in a commercial manner with responsibility for society, culture and the environment and empowerment and training.
Major Criteria No.5: Location
Location is accessible to any mode of transportation with clear signage to guide guests to the Homestay.
Major Criteria No.6: Hygiene and Cleanliness
Kitchen, bedroom, toilets, surrounding compound, food preparation shall be kept clean and hygienic.
Major Criteria No.7: Safety and Security
Safety personnel shall undergo basic training and guests shall be briefed on safety aspects prior to taking part in any Homestay activity and be ready for emergency rescue. Major Criteria No.8: Marketing and Promotion
Cooperation with local government and tour operators for marketing to identify and approach target markets and design itineraries/packages to suit their needs and expectations and the Unique Selling Proposition (USP) of the village to differentiate it from other Homestays. Major Criteria No.9: Economic, Environmental, Sociocultural Sustainability
Create jobs and generate income for the community. Activities for tourists shall not impact nature and the environment and respect the traditions and preserve the local culture.

Option 1: On-line Application forms and submit documents via website
- Step 1: Applicant fill in the information in the on-line Application form and Self-assessent form and attached files and submit online.
- Step 2: Applicant waits for the response from the Provincial DICT/MICT (within 1-3 week) via website and by telephone and/or email.
- Step 3: Asian Tourism Standard certification Board and Assessors visit the place and ubdertake assessment at the appointed time.
- Step 4: Asian Tourism Standard certification Board and Assessors notify the assessment audit to the applicant (within 1-3 week) by telephone and/or email
- Step 5: Give the award and the certicate of the Asian Tourism Standard
Option 1: Off-line Application forms and submit documents at the Provincial DICT or MICT
- Step 1 Applicatnt download Application form and Self-assessent form
- Step 2: Applicatnt submit filled in application form and self-assessment form and attached files at the Provincial DICT/MICT
- Step 3: Applicant waits for the response from the Provincial DICT/MICT (within 1-3 week) by telephone and/or email.
- Step 4: Asian Tourism Standard certification Board and Assessors visit the place and ubdertake assessment at the appointed time.
- Step 5: Asian Tourism Standard certification Board and Assessors notify the assessment audit to the applicant (within 1-3 week) by telephone and/or email.
- Step 6: Give the award and the certicate of the Asian Tourism Standard.
